They say time is money, and this would appear to be the case in any U.S. city, even those with a more laconic reputation. San Antonio, home to well over a million people, is one of those places where looks can be deceiving. They have their one professional franchise, the NBA's Spurs, but they take their business very seriously, having posted multiple championships over a stretch of many successful seasons. They have the River Walk, which sounds like a venue for strolling (if not outright moseying), but is actually a magnet for commerce and revenue.
Sun Dials in the Lone Star State
Houston and Dallas may hog the spotlight, but San Antonio is also a place where everyone seems to be "on the clock". There are not only a good many stores which offer fashionable versions of the classic chronographs, there are also shops whose wares are more of the "off-the-wall" variety. Whether one is looking for the newest Indy 500 neon beer sign (that also happens to tell time), or a legit antique that's been ticking away the hours since the days of yesteryear, clock shopping in San Antonio runs the gamut.
Meet the Clockers
Clocks of San Antonio is one such obviously-named seller. Conveniently located off a main freeway, their expertise extends from grandfather and cuckoo clocks to
Harley Davidson clocks - time pieces which are considerably more complicated than the clocks which hang on most walls. Another is the family-owned Matter of Time, which has been doing business since 1984, selling and servicing clocks and watches of all kinds. They also offer a consignment program in which someone wishing to sell their clock can put it in front of the people who are looking for one.
In the place where the Alamo still stands, there is also no shortage of repair shops that cater to the owners of both clocks and watches. San Antonio, while as busy and pressed for time as anyplace else, still has the good sense to rely on clocks that will only do what you want them to do. They don't need the weather report, National Hockey League standings or the latest stock market spasms. They just need time.
