I'm visiting a relative who will be graduating from basic training at Lackland air force base in Texas. I'm wondering if it's easy to get to the base from San Antonio's city center without having to rent a car. I'd like to use public transportation during the trip to hit most tourist spots and the air force base. Is that possible?

San Antonio has a bus system and a downtown streetcar that takes you to all the major attractions. Your best bet is to purchase a one day pass for $4.00 at their web site.
Also check out their streetcar site http://www.viainfo.net/BusService/Streetcar.aspx
Yes there are buses that go to Lackland. You may have to do a bit of walking, however, to get from the base entrance to the graduation. Bus 65 takes you to Lackland, and 611, 612, 613, 614, and 615 take you by there. I suggest that you take a taxi from time to time or have one of his friends’ parents or friends drive you around a bit. It’s a bit of a hike.
As far as downtown goes… All the tourist attractions are really close together, so you’ll have no problem.
You should be fine and can buy an all day pass at any HEB business center. The buses are really clean too for a big city.If you are going to downtown from Lackland you should do ok and may have to walk from stop to stop and transfer a few times. The only issue I ever had with the bus system is getting from say the very far NE side of town to the far west side etc.. but since you are going downtown area and tourist areas everything is pretty close together.
